Yuletide Letter 2020

DEAR YULETIDE AUTHOR,

First of all, thank you! I'm excited about this year's Yuletide (both writing and receiving!) and I'm sure I will love whatever you write!

Some of my general likes are family, found family, and family feels (probably pretty obvious from some of my prompts here). I love the ways families take care of each other, and how that gets expressed in word and action. These days especially, I tend to enjoy happy endings. Character death makes me sad, and the world feels sad enough already without offing my faves. Hurt/comfort, angst, and terrible things happening are all fair game, so long as they're all right in the end.

More specifically:

House in the Cerulean Sea--Calliope. Calliope is a delightful cat, and I would love her opinion of the goings on in the house. Or of Linus before (or during or after!), or of the children or Arthur or... look. Anything from her point of view would be wonderful. What does she think of all of this?

Newsflesh--Shaun, George, Mahir. In my heart of hearts, I would love these three as an OT3. I know the main pairing of the series may not be everyone's jam, and i get that. It sure surprised me the first time around. But I would love these three together if you can swing it. If you can't--I totally get it. I'd love to have their friendship over the years too. Shaun and Mahir's friendship, independent of George, because it did develop while she was gone. George's ongoing friendship with Mahir. Ideally no villainizing Nandini. She seems great. But an AU where that just... failed to happen? Sounds fine.

Red, White, and Royal Blue--Alex, Henry, June, Bea. Siiiiiiiiblings! I would love to see Bea and June relating to each other as the big sisters of these two idiots. How they deal with their little brothers, text conversations about YOUR BROTHER DID THIS or whatever. ALTERNATIVELY--how these sibling relationships play out when the four of them are toegether, or perhaps how they would play out around a future royal wedding? I love love family stuff. c:

I hope this helps, and i look forward to reading whatever you write! Thank you again!

Yuletide Letter 2019

Dear Yuletide Author,

As always, thank you in advance! This is my favorite fic exchange, and I'm so glad you're participating this year, and I can't wait to see what you write!

First, as always, a few general likes and dislikes.

Things that I love: Family, found family, stories where people have to deal with icky feelings, or stories where they utterly fail to deal with them at all (feelings are gross!), fluff, h/c.

Things that I am not generally a fan of: Incest, noncon, torture, major character death, bad endings.

Gotham by Gaslight
All of these characters are such absolute delights, and it seems at the end of the movie that they're about to start spending a lot of time together. How does that go? How do they all adjust, considering that this is definitely not a situation they would have expected to be in. Or how might they have interacted at points in the movie that we didn't see? Or... anything! I just really like these characters and want more of them (this will be a continuing theme).

Spindle's End
THEIR FRIENDSHIIIIIIIIP. It's so powerful that it broke a curse. How does it change when they're no longer living next door to each other? What are those letters like? Or what about those days at Woodwold where they're being knit so close together that they're breathing in unison? Or after the curse is broken and Peony is suddenly the princess now?

The Night Circus
This is one of those "just please more!" requests. Anything from her point of view, or detailing what her Test was like, or what she thinks of all of this either before, during, or after the events of the book.

Batman Beyond
THESE TWO DORKS. I would love any brother stuff between Matt and Terry; bonus if Matt is doing the Robin thing, and Terry is losing his mind a bit, because we all know what happened the last time Batman had a Robin. But also just... as we've seen, vigilantism can take a toll on a person, so seeing Terry and/or Matt dealing with that and leaning on family would be very sweet.

Newsflesh
I don't really ship these two, but I love them as BFFs. I would love anything of their friendship over the years, and how they deal with all of the crazy people they work with. They are both too good for this nonsense and deserve much better. I could imagine them having regular tea and bitching sessions over skype or whatever. You decide! Or if you're feeling shippy? Go for it! I'm sure that would be awesome too!

Dear Yuletide!

Dear Author,

Sorry this took me so long! I'm really excited for Yuletide this year, and I hope you are, too. And thanks!

First some general things that I love: Family, found family, stories where people have to deal with icky feelings, or stories where they utterly fail to deal with them at all (feelings are gross!), fluff, h/c.

Things that I am not generally a fan of: Incest, noncon, torture, major character death, bad endings.

Now the specifics:

Spindle's End, Katriona and Rosie
ANY AND ALL family stuff between these two. Rosie and really digging into her feelings as she realizes that despite Kat being her "cousin" she really sees her as her mother. Kat and her fretting. Post canon, during the years of growing up... anything. I love them.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Dick, Jason, and Tim
In what will probably become a running theme in my requests, I just want more of these kids. I want to know how they came to be together, or how they coped when Bruce and Alfred took them in. This hits my found family buttons with a brick.

Newsflesh, Shaun, Georgia, Mahir.
And I guess we come to exceptions to the above stated preferences, because I do actually ship Shaun and George, and uh. The series is kind of all about major character death. But specifically here, I'd love to see Mahir putting up with their bullshit. He is overworked, underpaid (there is no amount of money that is worth what he has to deal with from them), and somehow he still likes them enough to call them friends. So what does that look like?

Damar Series Gonturan
I had never considered a story about Gonturan before, but after seeing her as a character for Yuletide, I suddenly needed her story. As we all know, she has a history far too long to be contained by any one tale, but I'd love to read anything about her origins or adventures. Before, during, or after the wielders we know and love.

Wayward Children Unnamed Wolcott Child
I WANT MORE ABOUT THIS KID. I want to know about his growing up, and if he ever reconnects with his sister(s), and if he finds a door of his own (YES PLEASE). Considering how terrible the Wolcotts are, I really can't imagine them doing better this time around, and I'd love to see what fresh new and terrible mistakes they make. And also if he eventually finds a not-terrible family of his own. (Also don't feel limited to "he." We all know how terrible the Wolcotts are about gender in every way possible.)

Dear Yuletide Author

Hi! Thanks for your patience while I actually got myself together to write this. I realized just this moment as I had received my request that I had not actually... written my own letter.

Because I'm lame.

So without further ado, onto the requests!

First some general things that I love: Family, found family, stories where people have to deal with icky feelings, or stories where they utterly fail to deal with them at all.

General things that I am not generally a fan of: Incest, noncon...I actually have very few hard nopes, so let's move on to the specifics.

Batman Beyond: Bruce Wayne, Terry McGinnis

I love the dynamic these two characters have. Grumpy old cynical Batman v. young and still basically optimistic Batman. This fandom and the universe it's a part of have been close to my heart for many years, and I am always happy to receive any kind of fic from it. Bonus if you'd like to include other characters. I love the rest of their Batfam, and Both Terry's and Bruce's Justice Leagues. Go wild! I'm sure I'll love it.

Newsflesh: Maggie Garcia

Maggie so deserves to have more screentime. I would love anything from her life--before it got flipped, turned upside down, her story off-screen while everything is going down, or how things fall out for her (and Alaric?) afterward. Cameos from all other characters welcome.

Oh, and if you're into Maggie/Buffy? I would LOVE more of their story.

Dark Tower: Jake Chambers, Roland Deschain

This is a character set I really just can't imagine in a ship. But I love their relationship and how it evolves over time from "this kid I found" to the obvious guilt, and then to real family by the end. I have so many feelings about these two. So any quiet moments, or adventures that might have been... Really *anything* featuring these two. All other characters totally welcome!

Wayward Children: Jack and Jill

I feel like there is so much space to tell more stories about Jack and Jill, and I would love to hear more. More stories of them growing up with their terrible parents, or growing up separately on the Moors. Or the brief period when they return home before they get packed off to school, or when they return to the Moors and maybe learn how to be sisters again.

THERE IS SO MUCH, and I would be thrilled to have anything.

Hope this was helpful, and once again, sorry I got it up so late!

Happy writing, I hope!

Fic or Treat!

fic or treat

Rules:
((This version from [livejournal.com profile] kirax2 ))
1. Comment in this thread and say, "Fic or Treat!"

2. Tell me who you're dressed as. (You don't have to actually be dressed as that person). You can be any one character from a fandom I know. If I'm not familiar with your character I might--or might not--ask you for a different one. You can be dressed as the same character as someone else, but try to give it a bit of variety if you can (i.e. specify a different version of your character).

3. On October 31st, you'll get a treat! It might be an icon, a song recommendation, maybe even an actual fic or anything else I can think of! Hopefully with a Halloween spin.

The week before they are to face off for the deal, Wayne Enterprises and Queen Industries are broken into by someone dressed as Arrowette. When Conner knows too many details about Cissie's business proposal, Tim and Cissie begin to wonder if he isn't following in his father's footsteps after all. But that still doesn't explain who Arrowette is or why someone would frame Cissie.

Your dominant hues are cyan and blue. You like people and enjoy making friends. You're conservative and like to make sure things make sense before you step into them, especially in relationships. You are curious but respected for your opinions by people who you sometimes wouldn't even suspect.

Your saturation level is lower than average - You don't stress out over things and don't understand people who do. Finishing projects may sometimes be a challenge, but you schedule time as you see fit and the important things all happen in the end, even if not everyone sees your grand master plan.

Your outlook on life is bright. You see good things in situations where others may not be able to, and it frustrates you to see them get down on everything.

Five things...

For [livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai, as promised:

Five Times Tim Considered Quitting Being Robin/Kestrel:

1) His sixteenth birthday, when Bruce put him through that "test." When Sadie became Robin, Tim told Bruce that she would get such a test over his dead body. Fortunately, Alfred, Dick and--surprisingly--Jason all agreed.

2) When Bruce's files on the Justice League came to light. Tim had known about them, of course, but he had never expected that it would affect his relationship with Young Justice until it did. He wondered then if being Batman's apprentice was such a great idea.

3) When the Titans came back from the future with the knowledge of what they could become. Tim looked really hard at the Robin suit after that, and wondered if it was worth it.

4) The time everyone thought he died. Seeing the looks on their faces, he wondered if it was fair to keep doing the job that put him at such risk every night.

5) The day Sadie was born. He thought about quitting so that he would be there to watch her grow up.

...And I'm still working on the other one, but does anyone else have any requests? I do DC, Harry Potter, Sailor Moon, (some) X-Men... if you don't know, ask me.

Yuletide and JBBS

So, I participated in both Yuletide and the Jinge Bells, Batman Smells fic exchanges, which--let me tell you--made for an interesting December oh... 15-20th, when it got to be crunch time for both exchanges. Which is neither here nor there. Because the point of this entry is to share the awesome fics I recieved this year through these exchanges!

First, the Yuletide fics! (I was so spoiled this year)

String Theory by par_avion, my wonderful, delightful Yuletide author. A lovely fic about Aly and George from Tamora Pierce's Tortall books. Takes place shortly after Trickster's Queen, and is a wonderful look at their interesting father-daughter dynamic. A really great read--especially if you love Aly and George as much as I do.

Letters from Rajmuat by glass_icarus--A Yuletide Treat! Another take on ALy and George (did I mention how spoiled I was?). Comprised entirely of correspondence from Aly to George--and a really great handle on Aly's voice. I love letter!fic.

My Throne I Resign by Dien. Another Yuletide Treat, but this one is a drabble on Aerin and Luthe from Robin McKinley's Damar books. It's wonderful and hurts in all the right places. It reads like an excerpt from Ms. McKinley's own pages.

Memory's Joy by Merfilly--a NYR 2008 fic! For me! Batman TAS's Dick looks back on one of the defining moments of his and Bruce's relationship. A wonderful, feel-good father-son piece which set me into fits of joy this afternoon when I got the notification.

A Ticket Out--Being... my Yuletide offering. :-P A Blade Trinity fic about Abby and King. King is a vampire who wants to die. Abby offers to rectify the situation.

And now for the JBBS fics (a shorter list, I promise!):

Tim Remembers by [livejournal.com profile] shananagin--written for [livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai and I! Follows Tim-Robin's relationships with his Young Justice teammates over the years. A very happy, light-hearted fic.

Operation: Christmas Spirit--being [livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai and my Yuletide offering for Kate. Bart decides Tim works too hard and needs some holiday cheer. He brings Cissie along for reinforcement, but Tim is working.

::whew!:: And I think that is all. It's been a good year for fic-gifts. Also--[livejournal.com profile] angel_gidget, don't despair! I am working on a fic for you, and I'm hoping to get it done soon, but it's going slower than expected, and also acquiring trace amounts of plot. But--I bring you a teaser!

Today's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5!

Name five characters who should die, or should have died sooner.

Oh, LJ, you have answered my prayers, and this may be all DC... [Huh! Guess not!]

1) Jason Todd--DC Comics - Do I really have to explain this? He was dead. The *fans* voted him dead. Not by a great margin, no, but even the fans hated Jason Todd. WHY does he live again in all his wangsty glory? I hope he dies in the upcoming Final Crisis. Morrison--please, for the love of all that is good and holy--hear my plea. Kill Jason--again--and leave Bruce alone. Because if you kill Bruce, you will see how quickly I drop all of my Bat-titles.

2) Damian Wayne--DC Comics - Again is an explanation really necessary? Nightwing, all of the readers are asking the same thing you are asking yourself--why are you trying to save this ungrateful little shit? I know that you Bats always feel like you've failed if someone dies on your watch, but no one will blame you. Just this once--let the little turd die. Ra's will have a new body, and you will have a way more awesome bad guy to deal with than that spoiled fucking child.

3) Arthur Weasley--Harry Potter - It's complicated. I *liked* Arthur, but he was the one that JKR saved, and had 2 other characters die instead. Which two, you ask? Tonks and Lupin, of course. My FAVORITE CHARACTERS IN ALL SEVEN BOOKS. So... I wish Arthur had died instead. I know, it's cold.

4) Sirius Black--Harry Potter - Should have died sooner. By the end of OotP, he was this whinging spoiled brat. I get that he never really had the chance to grow up, but it doesn't change that Harry needed him to be a grown up, and he wasn't. And he never got that Harry was not James, which I hated.

5) Susan Pevensie--Narnia - I wish she had died with her brothers and sister and parents. I wish she could have been with them that last time in Narnia, and then with them in heaven. It would have been a happier ending for me.

Yay, Fannish Five!

And today's question is:

What are your five favorite canonical friendships?

1) Mark, Roger, and Collins (Rent): I am firmly in the camp that does not make boyslash out of these guys. I love their friendship, with all its snark and underlying love. They make me want to squish them and snuggle them and call them George.

2) Superboy and Robin (DCU): The banter between these two is always entertaining, and who can resist a friendship that began over Poison Ivy, pheromones, and a ring made out of Green K?

3) Robin and Raven (Animated Titans): Season Four--which I fondly refer to as the Raven Season--really spotlights interaction between these two, and makes it probably my favorite friendship in the series. Also one of my favorite friendships in general.

4) The Founders (Harry Potter): Never were there such friends as these, the Sorting Hat says, so it's canon! :-P I especially like the fact that J.K. Rowling says almost nothing about them aside from this, so I am free to use my imagination as to how these lot became friends. It makes me happy.

5) Elphaba and G(a)linda (Wicked, especially the musical): The end of that show gets me every damn time, and not because Elphaba gets the guy. Watching the two of them say goodbye forever to a friendship that has meant so much just *breaks* me. ::weeps::

And in other news, it's about a million degrees, and I have to work tomorrow morning. This makes me sad. But I have a fan pointing at me, and this is a source of joy, so my emotional equilibrium is unchanged. :-D

Fannish Five!

Name five of the funniest lines of dialogue.

1) From All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder (written by Frank Miller, who I'm not wild about as a Batman writer, but this was funny):

Dick Grayson: So what do you call this thing, anyway?
The Goddamn Batman (looking badass): The Batmobile
Dick Grayson (rolling his eyes): That is totally queer.
The Goddamn Batman (looking pissed): Shut up.

2) From Young Justice (which is almost universally very funny), in the No Man's Land special:

Superboy: Let me get this straight. Gotham City *needs* help, but *you're* sidelined, right? No Robins allowed?
Robin: Yeah. That about sums it up.
Superboy: But Batman never said anything about your *teammates,* right? Never a mention of *Young Justice* steering clear of Gotham or you'd be waxing the Batmobile?
Robin: Not in so many words.
Superboy and Impulse: LOOPHOLE!
Robin: What do you *mean,* loophole? Guys? GUYS!!
Superboy and Impulse: ROAD TRIP!

3) From Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (I laughed out loud reading this):

Ron: Why does my room have to be cleaned out? Harry and I are fine with it the way it is!
Mrs. Weasley: We are holding your brother's wedding here in a few days' time, young man--
Ron: And are they getting married in my bedroom? No! So why in the name of Merlin's saggy left--

4) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (and I honestly have a hard time picking just one thing from this, but DAMN, it was funny):

Jay: Why do they call you Cock-Knocker?
The Cock-Knocker: Funny story about that, true story, too-- ::WHAM, The Cock-Knocker slams Jay in the nuts with his oversized fist of Cock-Knocking::

Jay: And for one more record, he *loves* the cock. (I really couldn't pick just one thing from this. I found the movie very funny, if REALLY terrible)

5) From Teen Titans (the animated series):

All of the Titans: ::are wearing Robin costumes::
Starfire: Do you desire another slice of the cheese, Robin?
Beast Boy: Thanks, Robin. ::slides box to Cyborg:: Got room for another one, Robin?
Cyborg: Don't mind if I do, Robin.
Raven: You know Robins, I have to admit. The mask makes me feel cool.
Robin (who was behind Raven as she said this): Huh. Pizza. Sweet. ::sits down and grabs a piece of pizza. Looks cool:: You know, Robins, the mask makes me feel cool, too.
